TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Construction on the new TPD headquarters has yet to begin, and WCTV is looking into why.
This comes ahead of the agenda for next week’s Tallahassee City Commission meeting. One agenda item addresses allegations about what happened on January 25 at the construction site for the new facility.
Mayor John Dailey and City Commissioner Dianne Williams-Cox accused County Commissioner David O’Keefe of trespassing there.
The current TPD headquarters is located along East 7th Avenue, and the new location is on a nearly 30-acre site. It will be where the former Northwood Centre was located along North Monroe Street. That site was purchased by the city in 2019 for $6.8 million, and the estimated budget for construction has ranged between $45 and $60 million over the years.
The initial plan was set for construction to be finished in 2023, but at last month’s city commission retreat, officials gave an update showing construction will start this summer.
Assistant City Manager Wayne Teder says they anticipate 90% of the design plans to be completed in May, and construction documents are slated to be finished in June.
WCTV reached out to the city for additional information on the cause of the construction delays and details on current budget projections, but we did not receive a response by the time of publication.
City officials said the goal is to have the TPD facility complete by the end of 2025.
