Tallahassee, FL – Proposed legislation recently filed in the Florida Senate aims to impose penalties on drivers who occupy the left lane on certain roadways without the intention of passing another vehicle.
The bill, which was submitted last week by Representative Jenna Persons-Mulicka of Florida’s 7th District, would only apply to roads, streets or highways that have a minimum speed limit of 65 mph and feature two or more lanes.
The proposed statute would classify the infraction as a non-criminal traffic violation and would be considered a moving violation.
If passed, drivers who are found to be in violation would be subject to various penalties, including fines and points on their driver’s license.
The bill would not go into effect until January 1st, 2024, meaning drivers who continue to linger in the left lane would not be subject to penalties for the time being.
