The city of Tallahassee makes the top 10 on a recently published Forbes list that ranks the “best places to live in Florida in 2022,” putting the state’s capital in ninth place.
Following Tallahassee in the list is Pensacola in tenth place.
Comparisons made within the study come from data such as population, unemployment and personal income statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau as well as median home prices from Realtor.com and the cost of living for families of four from the Economic Policy Institute.
Here are some of the lifestyle factors that were considered when comparing the Florida cities, along with the numbers of where Tallahassee stands in the categories:
- Population: 197,102
- Median home price: $312,500
- Estimated monthly expenses: $6,522
- Median income: $46,461
- Unemployment rate: 2.9%
- Community wellness score: 54/100
- Criminal offenses reported: 7,302
With the city consisting of both Florida State and Florida A&M universities — as well as Tallahassee Community College — Tallahassee was addressed in the Forbes article as a great option for anyone looking to experience the college town lifestyle for a place to live in the state.

Forbes also highlighted how Tallahassee is an ideal place in Florida for young adults, given the job opportunities it offers in fields such as education, healthcare, state government and technology.
Compared to the westernmost city in Florida, Pensacola, the estimated monthly expenses for individuals living in Tallahassee is about $500 cheaper.
In a previous Forbes article last December where the magazine ranked the “15 cheapest places to live in America (with the best weather),” Tallahassee ranked no. 10 and was one out of the only two Florida cities on the list, with the other one being Jacksonville in 12th place.
This year’s Forbes list shows that Jacksonville’s estimated monthly expenses are similar to Tallahassee’s, with an amount of $6,594.
Tampa ranked no. 1 on the list of best Florida cities to live in, followed by Jacksonville at no. 2 and Gainesville in third place.
The other cities on the 2022 Forbes list from fourth to eighth place respectively are Cape Coral, Orlando, Miami, Melbourne and Sarasota.
