The Democrat is excited to welcome Gerald Thomas III to its sports team.
Thomas – a native of Savannah, Georgia, and 2020 Valdosta State graduate – will cover FAMU football and assist with preps and community sports.
Thomas, 24, who played football at Bethesda Academy in Savannah, previously served as the sports editor of the Bryan Count News and Coastal Courier in Georgia.
Thomas earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in Mass Media at Valdosta State.
He was a staff writer specializing in sports for VSU’s ‘The Spectator’ before being promoted to Digital Content Editor. Thomas was also a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
Thomas is son of Gerald II and Yolanda and the brother of Charmele and Cameron.
Thomas joins a Democrat sports staff that also features Curt Weiler, Carter Karels, Jack Williams and sports editor Jim Henry.
Weiler, 31, has covered FSU football and athletics across all platforms for five years at the Democrat, seven years overall.
Karels, 24, joined the Democrat in January 2022 and teams with Weiler to cover FSU athletics. Karels covered Notre Dame football for three years at the South Bend Tribune prior to joining the Democrat.
Williams, 24, joined the Democrat last June as its preps editor from the Devils Lake Journal in North Dakota.
Henry, 64, is an award-winning journalist and one of the state’s longest-tenured FSU beat writers, covering the Seminoles since 1987. He also co-authored “Tarnished Heisman” in 2008 with local author Don Yaeger and was a contributing writer on 10 other books with Yaeger.
