Authorities throughout southwest Florida will hit the road on Thursday in communities battered by the massive Hurricane Ian to assess damage, clear debris and respond to calls for help as millions of Floridians remain sheltered in place.

Ian, now weakened to a tropical storm, made landfall near Cayo Costa, Florida, on Wednesday afternoon, bringing powerful Category 4 hurricane-strength winds, rain and surge to the doorsteps of millions. Many coastal communities remained under several inches of flood water on Thursday and many more were left without electricity.

  1. If you are going to allow building in Hurricane prone areas, more stringent building codes will be required especially in mobile home parks. Although this is like a war zone, we need to learn from this. Just wondering from an engineering point of view, are these mobile home anchored down with peripheral concrete foundations? Are the walls and roofs tied down securely? Can a homeowner get affordable hurricane insurance coverage when their homes are retrofitted with extra hurricane bracing, etc.etc. ..? Frankly, they look like match boxes. People need to know their options to retrofit their homes. Can it be even done ? Extremely sad what I’m looking at. If we can get to the moon, we should be able to manufacture a stronger mobile home. The Governor has a war zone to navigate through. Biden needs to get over there on the ground to at least offer Hope for these dear people. Where the hell is Biden ? DeSantis seems on top of his game! However, where is Biden ? By now, Biden should be on the ground.

  2. Takes forever to come back from this. I'm in Bay county Fla after Michael and we haven't even got back something as simple as our Burger King. Stay Safe my fellow Floridians

  3. Having done Roofing Work for over 20 years in South Florida when I was younger, and seeing the Damage that was done by Hurricane Andrew in the 90's, I have to say that the damage doesn't look that bad, most of the roofs look intact, and trees are still standing. People are driving their cars, and the roads are passable, once the power is restored the recovery should be quick…

  4. Florida you are strong and Houston Texas is with all of you and praying for you and all of you will get through this and be ok and Florida is still one of my favorite states and all of you will recover from this devastating event and Florida will be back again.

  5. The pilot said he was flying to Pine Island and Matlacha. He went to Matlacha but NOT Pine Island. So far in all the reporting everywhere I have not seen one single picture of Pine Island. St. James City is there. How about video? How about a snap shot? Or even a post card? Something Anything. Do you know there is a city? St. James City. Which last we heard it was at ground zero.

  6. There are erector-set like bridges that can be put up in a matter of days. They can easily span the broken bridges at Sanibel and Pine Island. Dredging can be started to repair the washed out sand bars. Shouldn't take long to create a gravel road bed that can get traffic moving. If they really tried access to both islands could be restored in two weeks. Then more permanent structures could be started.

  7. Yes you have recources in men power. Just bring 1 million people from China and all will be quick. If your gov can affort to send $80 billion to Ukraine so you can easely bring $200 billion to Florida to help people to rebuild their homes and infastracture. By the way about the bridge to this island army corps can bring special portable pontunes to make temporary bridge to carry the traffic before finish permanent bridge construction.

  8. Instead of showing video of wealthy areas where people have money and insurance to rebuild why not concentrate your effort on the less fortunate who lost their homes their jobs and have nothing! These are the people who cleaned houses tended bar cooked and server the food cleaned hotel rooms ! They are the real Tragedy. My prayers go out to all who have suffered .
