John Myer II
April 25, 1950 – March 18, 2022
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina – Our beloved John Daniel Myer II of Hilton Head Island tragically passed away Friday, March 18th after suffering a series of small heart attacks with his wife and daughter by his side, holding his hands. Born April 25th, 1950 in Columbus Ohio to John Daniel and Virginia Lee (Julian) Myer, i.e. Peg and Bud. John was the oldest of two sons that ruled the waters of Buckeye Lake and the hallways as a Golden Bear from Upper Arlington, where he enjoyed lifeguarding, competitive swimming, and dutifully completing his Eagle Scout.
As a teenager he was gregarious, and funny, but impressionable by his neighborhood friends who introduced him to his first love. Cars.
After graduating from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Art, John married his best friend, and the love of his life, Mary Ivy Vickerman on October 9th, 1976. Although his ambition of radio stardom as Johnny Sunshine never came to fruition, John began his career as entrepreneur and philanthropist after taking over ownership of Julian-Myer Insurance company and joined the local chapter of the Jaycees.
In the early 80’s their family blossomed with the addition of two little monsters, John Daniel Myer III and Carolyn Ivy Myer, and the young family moved to Asheville, NC. Here he dominated the local autocross circuit with a myriad of cars ranging from a Formula Ford, to GTI and Ferrari to Mustang.
As with his love for racing, he nourished his ambitions of entrepreneurship. The business grew fervently, ultimately culminating in opening nine Little Caesar Pizza restaurants across four counties, and was awarded the prestigious Golden Label Award in 1990 for excellence in business.
As his professional responsibility grew, so did his altruistic endeavors. He volunteered and supported the Young Republicans, was President of The American Heart Association, received honors for blood donation at The Red Cross, shaped the future of the community with Leadership Asheville, ran for public office as County Commissioner, and bravely stood in front of hormonal and unpredictable teenagers as a volunteer teacher with Junior Achievement.
After selling Little Caesars, moving to Hilton Head, and taking over ownership of Mighty Mac Carpet Cleaning in 2000, his life of business and service continued in the LowCountry. In 2004 he received a patent for his invention the Railing Roller. A virtuoso of his craft, he was a master certified carpet inspector and held seven certifications with IICRC. A proud member of VanLandingham Rotary, he was awarded Rotarian of the Year ’06-’07, voted into presidency ’08-’09, was on the board of directors, and was a Paul Harris Fellow.
Simultaneously, his joy of racing grew into a full-blown Porsche passion as he helped found Dark Side Driving and the Low Country branch of the Porsche Club, was the 2011 Porsche Parade Coordinator, and the chief driving instructor for Porsche driving education.
John was an astute businessman and a pillar of community dedication, but perhaps what embodied John the most was time spent with friends and family. John loved days at the track (to watch and to race), loud engines, his homemade eggnog and BBQ sauce, fall-off-the-bone ribs, a prominent mustache, and his Yaller Boxster. His infamous family soirees were filled with friendship, laughter, good red wine, a Cuban cigar, more good red wine, a rare cooked steak, political banter, a dancing sample from Rocky Horror Picture Show, and a Rendezvous showing on the big screen. He loved his children’s friends as if they were his own, coaxing them to get on the track or to argue about politics, and always welcomed a full and loud home.
A jovial prankster that started as a youth torturing his younger brother and sneaking cows to the second floor of his fraternity house, then grew into a full-blown artform as an adult. May it be searching for vinyl seating options optimal for acoustic flatulence or painting the toes of the over-imbibed couch sleepers,
John loved any excuse to laugh. And that will be what is loved and remembered most by those he knew and the loved ones he left behind.
His love and generosity were beyond measure and will be greatly missed by his beautiful wife Mary, daughter Ivy, granddaughter Phoebe, brother Peter, cousin Lori ,Niece Gwyn, and Nephew PJ.
Preceded in death by his son Danny, the two Myer men are now together waxing poetic about politics, listening to a classic vinyl, enjoying a good drink, and keeping a watch on their family. Please join us for a celebration of life on Sunday, April 3rd at Spring Lake Pavilion in Hilton Head Plantation from 2 – 4pm. (In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to The VanLandingham Rotary. https://vanlandinghamrotary.org/)
