It’s gotten so difficult, Runaways Animal Rescue has stopped accepting new animals now too. Giroux said she will do whatever it takes to keep it going, even if she doesn’t want to — including laying off the few paid employees they have and running entirely on volunteers and her own labor.

  1. Runaways Animal Rescue is a 501C3 charity that runs on donations and grants. It is not supported by taxes like municipal shelters are. This should really be the responsibility of Pasco County but counties are never funded properly either, resulting in the formation of well meaning folks who start these charities. They usually do a better job of care and adoption but don't always have a stable financial cash stream. In some more creative solutions, the county turns over the responsibility to a non profit and contracts with them to do the job but adequate money has to follow.

  2. Sounds like she’s siphoning money or somebody is embezzling money. Instead of giving yourself big bonuses and raises and high salaries, use the money to take care of the poor animals and start applying for some federal and state grants and get someone to help you solicit charitable contributions the appropriate way

  3. I don't understand why they do not have some membership programs, hold fundraisers and local events to bring in donations. Keeping the money flowing in is all part of running a successful business. It is sad that it can mean closing up even an animal shelter.
