Law enforcement blocked Interstate 75 exits in Alachua County on Sunday evening to stop a man who allegedly killed two women in Tallahassee.
According to an Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) release, Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers notified ACSO they were following a vehicle that was believed to be driven by a suspect wanted for a homicide. Troopers said the vehicle was entering Alachua County on I-75 from Columbia County.
ACSO deputies blocked multiple exit ramps and positioned themselves along I-75 with stop sticks and head off the suspect’s vehicle. Deputies then conducted a PIT maneuver that caused the vehicle to become disabled between NW 39th Avenue and Newberry Road.
According to the ACSO release, “Deputies were unable to make verbal or physical contact with the driver, so the ACSO SWAT Team was activated. The SWAT Team responded to the scene, where a specialized armored vehicle was utilized to allow team members and medical personnel to safely approach, where it was determined that the subject inside was deceased.”
The suspect appeared to take his own life inside the vehicle, but the FHP will investigate the suspect’s death.
According to the Tallahassee Democrat, two women were killed at Mission Hills Apartments in northwest Tallahassee after police were called to investigate shots fired at 5:47 p.m. The alleged subject was identified and led law enforcement on a multi-county pursuit on I-75.
