TALLAHASSEE, FL – The University of Pittsburgh No. 18 women’s soccer team (12-3-1, 5-2-1 ACC) fought hard until the end, but fell to the No. 1 Florida State Seminoles (12-0-1, 8-0-1 ACC), 2-3, Thursday evening at Seminole Soccer Complex.

The Panthers started this evening’s Top-20 matchup off strong – holding a strong dominance on the No. 1 Seminoles.

Pitt created a number of scoring opportunities in the first 44 minutes but couldn’t find a chance to place the goals.

Leaving just under a minute on the board, Katie Zailski put the Panthers on the board first off of an assist by Ashton Gordon. This is Zailski’s first goal on the season and Gordon’s third assist.

The Panthers headed into the locker room with the 1-0 lead – outshooting the Seminoles 8-3 and holding a 4-1 lead in corners.

Pitt held a strong dominance coming into the second half, posting three shots within a minute of play. The Seminoles equalized the board in the 63rd minute off of a header from a corner kick.

Florida State then created a 3-1 lead after posting two goals in under three minutes.

Pitt still held a dominant front on the Seminoles, continuing to create scoring opportunities. At the 81st minute, Samiah Phiri cut Florida State’s lead down to one after completing a goal on her penalty kick. This is Phiri’s 9th goal on the season.

The Panthers held the edge in shots (16-10), saves (1-0) and corners (7-3).

Tonight’s two goals scored against Florida State marks the first time in program history that the Panthers have posted more than one goal against the Seminoles in 90 minutes.
