You are on to something, so here is the next step. Go get some snap buttons and attach the male side onto the drive block and the female end on the pad. They are sold where sewing supplies are sold and also are used to snap on boat covers etc so there may be different types that are more robust than others. I think there may be some available at automotive shops too. You may have solved this vexing problem!
