TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – No. 20 NC State split its two-game series at No. 7 Florida State after dropping Sunday’s contest 8-1 at Dick Howser Stadium. The Wolfpack captured an 8-7 win on Friday before Saturday’s game was canceled due to poor field conditions.

The Seminoles (35-10, 14-9 ACC) jumped ahead first for the second time in this weekend’s series behind Cam Smith’s two-run homer in the first inning. Max Williams opened the inning with an HBP before Smith smacked his 10th home run of the season. Florida State doubled its lead on a fielder’s choice and a two-out RBI double from shortstop Alex Lodise.

NC State (26-18, 13-10 ACC) cut its deficit to 4-1 behind Chase Nixon’s sacrifice fly to left field in the top of the second. Cal Fisher re-established Florida State’s four-run lead with a solo homer to left field in the bottom of the fourth.

Right-hander Logan Whitaker, who last pitched on March 29 due to illness, made his first appearance in over a month and posted back-to-back outs to help close out a scoreless fifth frame.

The Wolfpack brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the sixth. Brandon Butterworth lined an infield single to third base before Matt Heavner extended the frame with a two-out single to left field. Chase Nixon then battled back from a 1-2 count to load the bases with a walk. Florida State left-handed reliever Connor Hults escaped the bases-loaded jam behind a diving catch in center field from DeAmez Ross, robbing Eli Serrano III of a two-out, multi-RBI base hit.

Florida State added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-1.

Alec Makarewicz and Heavner paced NC State with two hits apiece with Makarewicz smacking his 17th double of the season, moving into a tie for first on the Wolfpack roster with Garrett Pennington.

Wolfpack left-handed reliever Jacob Dienes made his first appearance of the season in the bottom of the eighth. Carson Kelly and P.J. Labriola also combined to toss a scoreless inning of relief.

Dominic Fritton (3-4) suffered the loss in Sunday’s setback, while Florida State starter Carson Dorsey improved to 4-2 after tossing 5.2 innings while allowing just one run.
