TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Tallahassee Community College (TCC) will soon be known as Tallahassee State College.
The school considered changing its name in 2023 and voted on it last November. Governor DeSantis signed Senate Bill 522 officially renaming the college.
The institution originally opened as Tallahassee Junior College in 1966 and four years later it was renamed Tallahassee Community College. On July 1, it will officially become Tallahassee State College.
TCC student Justice Barfield said he believes the new name will provide more opportunities for students.
“I definitely look forward to it, it’s definitely going to be a change. I look forward to the school becoming a state school. It’s definitely one of my favorite schools I’ve been to. So, it’ll be interesting seeing it offer more to its students,” Justice Barfield said.
Another student shared that although the name will be different the school spirit will remain strong.
“I think the school will feel the same, it will just match more what we’re doing here to what we are called,” Julia Mcglynn said.
Officials unveiled a new gold academic seal earlier this week reading ‘Tallahassee State College (TSC) Founded in 1966.’
WCTV spoke with TCC president Jim Murdaugh and he shared that the seal is for official documentation such as transcripts and ceremonial programs.
“We’ll never lose the notion that we are here for the community, but what it really represents is a wide range of things that all sort of came together, with the inclusion of new baccalaureate degrees here, with the expansion of our charter high school that we’ve done, with what we’re doing in our workforce program,” Murdaugh stated.
Murdaugh shared that the new logo will be unveiled this summer.
