TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Tallahassee Police Department announced on Monday its patrol program for pedestrians and bicyclists’ safety is expanding in the capital city.
The current program, known as High Visibility Enforcement (HEV), initially began in October to reduce the amount of crashes related to pedestrians and bicyclists, according to TPD.
Detective Jim Harris said Tallahassee is ranked in the top 10 for the most pedestrian crashes and fatalities statewide. “We’re on the same level right now with cities like Tampa – which are significantly larger than us,” said Harris.
The expanded areas include:
– Capital Circle Northwest from West Tennessee Street to West Tharpe Street from 1 to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays
– West Gaines Street from Lake Bradford Road to Railroad Avenue from 3 p.m. to midnight on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays; and 12 to 2 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays
– Tennessee Street from Callark Street to Rogers Hall Driveway from 8 a.m. to midnight on Sundays and Thursdays
Since October, TPD reported more than 600 educational interactions with drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. Harris said officers in this program are, specifically, trained to look for violations that could help prevent a pedestrian crash – like blocking the crosswalk when you stop at a red light. “The goal is to educate the public, so that these crashes are not happening,” said Harris.
The targeted enforcement is expected to last through May 10.
