Two Tallahassee residents killed in deadly Jefferson

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Fla. (WCTV) – Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol were investigating Friday after a pickup truck hauling another vehicle on a trailer crashed into a semi-tractor carrying a hazmat trailer.

The crash happened on U.S. Highway 90 near State Road 59 around 3:05 a.m., Friday.

Investigators say the pickup truck being driven by a 71-year-old Tallahassee man lost control while heading west on Highway 90 and overcorrected causing him to crash into the semi-tractor. Both the driver of the pickup truck and his passenger, a 90-year-old woman also from Tallahassee died at the scene. The driver of the semi, a 64-year-old man from Panacea, Fla suffered minor injuries.

FHP said in a press release that a HAZMAT team from the Tallahassee Fire Department was still on scene Friday afternoon monitoring the scene for safety.

Crews from Wacissa Volunteer Fire Rescue posted an update to Facebook Friday afternoon saying that Highway 90 would remain closed through Saturday morning as troopers and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection continue to investigate.

According to FHP’s live accident tracking map, the crash was listed as a “Fatality” and was called into 911 at 3:12 a.m.

At 3:53 a.m., Florida 511 sent out a text message warning of a “major incident” that closed all East and Westbound lanes of Highway 98 in Jefferson County. The automated text message also warned motorists to avoid the area if possible.
