TALLAHASSEE — Ellis Yohn pitched a phenomenal game Wednesday night against the Tallahassee Community College Eagles. He tossed six scoreless innings, gave up only three hits, struck out five and walked only one batter. His performance led to a 3-1 Wallace win and earned the Govs a split with the Eagles. Wallace dropped game one 6-4.

“I haven’t pitched much all year so my arm was strong,” Yohn said. “I really wanted to be out there. I trusted my stuff. I knew I had a decent change-up but I knew I couldn’t throw it all the time. So I mixed in my slider. I threw it enough just to let them know I had one and they couldn’t sit on anything. My inside fastball kept them tied up all night.”

When he’s not pitching, Yohn is the designated hitter.

“I’ve got mixed emotions about it,” he said. “I like to hit, but I want to do whatever I need to do to help our guys win. I want them to know they can count on me — not just as a hitter, but also as a person.”

Right out of the gate, two quick hits gave the Govs an early lead. Cason Eubanks led off the game with a triple to center field. That was followed immediately by an RBI double from Jake Smith. That 1-0 lead held up until the sixth inning.

That’s when the Govs tacked on two more runs. The first scored on a bases- loaded hit by pitch. The second scored on an RBI single from Grayson Ashe.

The Eagles scored their only run in bottom of the seventh of Wallace reliever Caleb Muffoletto. Wyatt Jenkins doubled to right field and then scored on an unexpected bunt from Derek Henry.

As for game one, the Govs jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. That came courtesy of a two-RBI single from Sean Darnell and an RBI single from Yohn.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Eagles retaliated by scoring four runs of their own. Wallace starting pitcher Dewey Brock had trouble getting batters out. The first four batters he faced all got hits. Before he was able to get out of the inning, he walked two additional hitters and faced 11 total hitters in the inning. Brock did strike out three, but the damage was already done as TCC now had a 4-3 lead.

In the second, the Govs tied the game at 4-4 when Sean Darnell reached base on an infield hit and an error. That allowed Eubanks to score, who had also reached base on an infield single.

The Eagles scored the go-ahead and winning runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Eagles put together four hits, chasing Brock from the game.

John Locurto came on to pitch the final 3 2/3 innings, striking out six in the process. But the Govs offense couldn’t get anything else going,

The Govs and the Eagles will play again Sunday. The game will start at 1 p.m. on the Wallace campus.
