‘Do not pick up furniture from the street, and put it into your home. Getting rid of bed bugs can cost thousands of dollars,’ said one user in a response video

The internet is grilling a TikTok creator after going viral for picking up a couch on a New York City sidewalk and claiming it may actually be full of bedbugs.

With over 54 million views, a user by the name Amanda Joy posted a video on Saturday exclaiming she found her “dream couch for free.” In the video, she showed viewers the blue “Bubble” sofa from Roche Bobois that retails at around $8,000.

After initial claims from TikTokers that the couch was potentially a knock-off of the pricey brand, Joy posted a follow-up video showing the tag “for anyone that wants to tell me it’s fake.”

The bigger concern that worried viewers, however, was the condition the couch was left in. Joy said it had been pouring rain the day she found the sofa and picked it up 24 hours later to have it sent to her father’s workplace in order to give it a deep clean.

She is seen steam cleaning the furniture with her father and sister, and later placed it in her apartment.

“Do not pick up furniture from the street, and put it into your home,” one user said in a response video. “Getting rid of bed bugs can cost thousands of dollars.”

A Twitter user wrote “couches (especially 8k couches) get thrown out for a reason,” a sentiment shared by many viewers.

In her response video, Joy claimed the couch was left at her father’s workplace for two weeks before bringing it to her house.

“For everyone saying the couch was thrown out because of bed bugs… I personally think it was thrown out because it has a lot of rips that I’ve covered with pillows, and it has some stains,” she said while pointing towards a discoloured section of the sofa.

Her rebut to peoples’ claims that it was discarded “for a reason” is that it was “thrown in front of a very rich building.”

“Rich people throw out all their furniture for a reason all the time because they get new furniture every other year,” she said.
