A Lincoln High School cheerleading coach and another school district employee affiliated with the program were fired after reportedly providing alcohol to minors during an out-of-town trip for a cheer competition.
“Two Lincoln High School Cheerleading sponsors have been removed from their responsibilities following allegations of improper conduct involving alcohol during an out of town trip,” the school district said in a statement to the Tallahassee Democrat. “The situation was immediately investigated and those involved were disciplined in accordance with School Board policies.”
The district did not name the employees, but Leon County Schools spokesperson Chris Petley confirmed that a cheerleading coach was one of the two employees terminated.
The situation was internally investigated by the school board and also sent to the Florida Department of Children and Families for further investigation, Petley said.
No other details were provided about the incident and it was not clear how many students were involved. The Democrat has requested the full report.
A DCF spokesperson said they were looking into the matter but had no other information.
The high schoolers were competing in Lakeland Feb. 3 at the Florida High School Competitive Cheerleading State Championships. The following weekend they competed at the UCA High School Nationals competition.
Just last year, the high school cheer team made their first ever appearance at the national competition in Orlando after finishing in the top five at the state cheer competition.
