TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Construction plans along with the price tag have changed regarding the completion of the new Tallahassee Police Department headquarters.

The facility is now expected to be completed in 2026. That’s according to a statement shared with WCTV from the City of Tallahassee’s spokesperson Alison Faris.

WCTV reported in February that the city’s goal was to have the facility completed by the end of 2025. However, Faris said it is not unusual for “for timelines to become more refined as projects take shape and significant progress has been made toward the implementation of the Northwood Master Plan since the site was selected as the home of the new TPD headquarters in January 2020.”

The current TPD headquarters is located along East 7th Avenue. The new headquarters will be located on a nearly 30-acre site and will sit along North Monroe Street where the former Northwood Centre was located.

The site was purchased in 2019 by the city for $6.8 million, with an initial estimated construction budget ranging from $45 to $60 million over the past years. However, the project is now expected to cost close to $135 million, according to a newly posted agenda item for the city’s commission’s next meeting on Wednesday, April 24.

The estimate was developed from last month up until now based on 60% of the design documents that were completed in February, according to the agenda item.

According to the agenda item, since January 2020, progress made toward the new headquarters’ construction includes:

  • completely demolishing the former 500,000-square-foot mall complex
  • remediating subsurface dry-cleaner contamination
  • completing master planning of the 29.5-acre site
  • evaluating the feasibility of a potential performing arts center

“All of this was necessary prior to beginning work on the headquarters facility,” Faris said.

As stated in the agenda item, 60% of design documents for the new headquarters have been completed, deep-building foundation work has been initiated and construction of a new state-mandated stormwater pond is underway.
