A Tallahassee man was arrested after he allegedly went to Fresh 4 Less while on his meal break from Popeyes and shot at a female employee just outside the supermarket.

Edward Johnson lll, 18, was charged Wednesday with attempted first degree murder and remains in the Leon County Detention Facility, according to Leon Circuit Court records.

On Monday night, Johnson and one of his male coworkers on their Popeyes meal break, clad in orange uniforms, walked into the Fresh 4 Less supermarket, 3183 North Monroe St., less than two miles north from where they worked.

In the check out line, Johnson allegedly “began questioning” a grocery worker, asking why she was “looking at the two of them,” court records said.

This started an argument between Johnson and the woman, which ended when she turned around and went back to work.

A short time later, however, she “observed [Johnson] walk … toward her,” raise his shirt and brandish a handgun, an affidavit said. She followed him outside, about 20 feet from the outdoor entrance. He pointed a gun at her.

“[She] heard one shot and noticed the bullet struck the pole attached to the handicap sign near her,” court records said. “[She] stated she was in fear for her life after he shot at her.”

The two men fled in a dark colored SUV, an affidavit said. Johnson dropped off his coworker at Popeyes.

Police interviewed the woman, Johnson’s coworker and a man who was waiting for his wife in the parking lot. Each of their statement’s identified Johnson as the shooter. Investigators also pulled surveillance footage and were able to view the entire incident, from the initial argument in the checkout line to the muzzle flash in the parking lot.

Johnson, who turned 18 in December, is scheduled to make his first appearance Thursday morning.
