TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – One Tallahassee family is trying to move forward after the death of their beloved mother, daughter and fiancée during the deadly storms in Leon County earlier this month.

Carolyn Benton was killed by a fallen tree as she was lying in bed on the morning of Friday, May 10. She was 47.

The tragedy happened at her home on Aenon Church Road, according to a Leon County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson. Benton leaves a loving family behind and her three children said they are holding each other together to cope with this difficult loss.

WCTV spoke with her daughter Asia Charlton who describes her mother as her everything.

Benton’s mother-in-law Mildred Wilson said the news of her death was heartbreaking.

“It’s kind of unbelievable, it’s like you make these plans, because I was supposed to see her later on that evening, and now everything has changed,” Wilson said.

Asia says she and her siblings have to look out for each other.

Charlton shared that checking in on her two older siblings has become a daily routine since their mom passed.

Benton’s family said losing her has been their worst nightmare, but they have to find a way to keep going for Carolyn.

“We will always remember her and we have to take the good and move forward with our everyday life,” Charlton said.

Her mother-in-law encouraged others to learn from their loss.

“Be like Carolyn was, loving and kind and embrace and love each other more because when you lose someone suddenly like this, it takes a lot out of you,” Wilson said.

Charlton has created a GoFundMe to support the costs of Benton’s funeral and burial services. You can contribute to it here.
