Dexter Smith, age 85, of St. Augustine, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on October 29, 2022. He was born on May 30th, 1937 in Burlington, North Carolina to Walter and Allene (Redding) Smith. He grew up in Burlington and was a 1955 graduate from Walter Williams High School. He went on to attend the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, graduating in 1959 and later attended Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, VA, graduating with a Masters Degree in Urban and Regional Planning. He married Patricia Terrell Smith of Haw River, N.C. Dexter enjoyed a long and successful career in municipal planning and real estate. He served as the Planning Director in Rocky Mt., VA., Smith Mountain Reservoir, Prince William County, Va., Roanoke, Va., and Durham, N.C. Dexter transitioned to a second career in real estate. He worked as a Commercial Real Estate Agent for Berkshire Hathaway in Durham, N.C. He was a longtime resident of Durham, NC and moved to Ponte Vedra Beach in 2018. He had been a resident of St. Augustine, FL. since 2022. In his free time he enjoyed spending time with his family and he loved to work in his Garden.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia T. Smith of St. Augustine; son, Jeffrey Christopher Smith of Purcellville, Virginia; daughter, Patria Smith Kunde of St. Augustine; grandchildren, Chad Kunde of Tallahassee, FL, and Austin Kunde of Falls Church, Virginia.

Private services will be held. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory can be made to: Community Hospice of NE Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL. 32257.

St. Johns Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
