As of Friday evening, the ACC adding Stanford and Cal still seemed rather unlikely, multiple conference sources said. The league presidents did not have another meeting scheduled, they added, though the issue could be revisited at any time. It’s hard to imagine FSU or Clemson changing their minds, and even if one of the two North Carolina schools did, there are enough other tentative supporters who could flip to no votes as well.
In some cases, a school’s president and AD are split on their stances. So even knowing the identities of the dissenters from what we’ll call an informal straw poll — not an official vote — is instructive but not the be-all, end-all. It’s worth remembering that administrators never call for a formal vote unless they know they have enough support. This hasn’t gotten to that point — and may not. — Auerbach
